Now that we no longer need to hurt animals for food, clothing, etc., why do we continue?

Why do we condemn animal cruelty, yet participate in a system which perpetuates it?

Does our pleasure justify their suffering?

In what other situation is it acceptable to inflict pain on another for personal pleasure?
